How To Play Blackjack
Blackjack is amongst the most popular and well recognized of modern casino games. It is a game between you and the dealer. The online casinos’ games of Blackjack are played with a single 52-card deck, to offer you the best possible chances of winning! There are many variations of the game – singledeck, multideck, European, classic, perfect pairs etc. Each variant has their own quirks, but the fundamentals of the game remain the same.
The Object Of Blackjack
The object of Blackjack is to obtain a hand with the highest possible value. This needs to be higher in value than the dealer’s hand and without exceeding 21. To start, you will be dealt two cards and the Dealer, one card, face up. Remember that all face cards (Kings, Queens and Jacks) have a value of ten and the Aces can have a value of one (1) or eleven (11).
If the first two cards dealt to you are an Ace and a card with a value of ten, you have Blackjack. In this case, the dealer will automatically lose and you will be paid out 2.5 times your original bet. Unless the dealer’s single card is an ace or a card of value ten, he will not be allowed to draw more cards as you already have the best possible hand.
Hit Or Stand?
If your first two cards do not total 21 then you may request additional cards (called a hit). If your hand does not go bust (exceeds 21) and still does not equal 21, you may continue to request additional cards until your hand goes bust, reaches 21 or you decide to leave your hand as it is (stand).
If you go bust the game is over and the dealer wins. If you reach 21 or choose to stand, the dealer will draw another card. If the dealer’s hand totals less then 17, the dealer must continue to draw cards until his hand’s value equals 17 or more. In the event of the dealer not going bust the value of the dealer and your hands are then compared. If your hand is stronger, the casino will pay you twice the amount originally wagered.
Choosing when to hit and when to stand does play an important role in Blackjack. You need to consider the cards that are potentially available to you in order to reach 21 (or near to 21). In addition you need to bare in mind the dealer’s odds of getting 21. As a general rule of thumb it’s best to stand on 17 or above. You should only stand on hands of 13 or above if the dealer’s face up card is 6 or less.
If you receive two cards of the same value (e.g. two tens, two fives, or two aces) then you can ‘split’. This gives you two hands instead of one, and from there you play as usual. When should you split? We suggest splitting Aces and Tens, but other options are dependent on the value of the dealer’s card.
Another option in Blackjack is to ‘Double Down’. By choosing to do this the player can increase the initial bet by up to 100% in exchange for committing to stand after receiving exactly one more card. This strategy is worth pursing if you have a hand of 10 or 11 – as you’re hoping the next card is an ace or 10 to take you to 21. That said, you could opt to double on 9s if the dealer’s up card is 6 or less.
The best strategy for blackjack is to play online. There are many options to play for fun and free. For example the MyVegas Blackjack App or demo play at the many online casinos and slot brands. Although some Blackjack strategies don’t always work online (e.g. counting cards) the principles of hit, stand, split and double will hold you in go stead going forward.
